2017 Major 3 Effingham GC

Major 3 - Effingham GC 2nd June

Raf reigns supreme!!

On a day where the sun shone brightly and the temperature averaged around 21-25 degrees, a field of 27 golfers met at Effingham Golf Club in Leatherhead Surrey to commemorate the passing of one of the association's original members. The committee had commissioned a new trophy named the Frank Fevrier Memorial Trophy, which will be played for annually at the 3rd ACGA major.

As has been the constant theme at our golf days, the banter and sense of camaraderie were in full effect. If you followed the sound of laughter you would find where we were.

The committee had agreed to re-introduce a blast from the past which was the ACGA sweepstake, this provided all attendees the opportunity to place odds based bets on the golfers in the field on a winner takes all basis with a contribution going to the societies charity.

Effingham golf club has been a venue that has welcomed the ACGA in previous years and the fact that we were playing a course familiar to us was even more poignant given the commemorative nature of our return this year.

This was an 18 hole stroke-play event and although attractive in its layout, the course was not easy, with a constant breeze and difficult greens.

The golf started promptly at 9:30am and some excellent scores were returned with sub-par rounds being the only benchmark for the winner.

As usual the golf machine aka Tyrone Carter returned a commanding and challenging score of 73, this however was only good enough to take 3rd place, with Mark Henry returning a score of 70 and the eventual winner Raf Roberts returning a fantastic score of 69.

The main purpose of this day was for ACGA members both old and new to place a mark of respect for the sad passing of our dear friend Frankie Fevrier. We all were extremely pleased to receive a playing visit from Frankie's partner Ingrid Clarke who not only played well, but also handed over the 1st prize and memorial trophy to Raf. Frank skinner (Vice Captain) captivated the audience with his memories of Frankie and general fun filled address, in his unique Bajan style, and to top it all Ingrid informed us that she enjoyed the day and would re-join the association following an emotional and very touching speech.

Days like today tell you all you need to know about the ACGA and why it is so special. Long may it continue...

The secretary of Effingham spoke with the captain to inform him that the club were very impressed with our conduct throughout the day, in addition the course marshall was very pleased with the fact that all of the groups easily achieved the four hour deadline to complete our rounds of golf with most groups returning to the club house in under three and a half hours.

Our next event is on Friday 7th July at Harpenden, please check the website for details.
