2017 Major 1 Vale of Glamorgan

Major 1 -  Vale of Glamorgan 8/9th April

The Terminator is back!

The opening weekender of the ACGA 2017 season was held at what can only be described as a high quality venue in South Wales – The Vale of Glamorgan. Eighteen of the ACGA’s finest made their way to this corner of the Principality (after having to pay £6.40 toll for the privilege!!), in fine sunny weather and in boisterous and confident mood. This was evidenced by the usual banter and predictions of other people’s games not travelling etc etc…

Round One played on the gentler Lakes course produced a few notable scores. Leading at the end of the day was the returning Machine, Tyrone Carter with 36 points. In 2nd place was our Captain Roger Goddard and 3rd Del Manderson with 33 and 32 points respectively. The only other notable scores were Stuart and Cassius on 29 points and Keith and Andy on 28. At this point it would be remiss of me to mention the two teenagers in the round. Steve Garner and Cora Edwards returned with a miserly score of 19 points to prop up the field on day one. More on this later….

Saturday evening’s meal in the Vale Hotel was extremely enjoyable and everyone was on top form with the “entertainment” of the high standard. Everyone then got their minds focused on the next day’s challenges…

The National course at the Vale definitely made use of the word “challenging”, as demonstrated by the average scores on the day. Following a long and difficult round for some, Tye Carter led the field home with 31 points to secure his comeback victory. Captain Roger came in 2nd on the day and overall with 30 points. Stuart returned a steady 24 points which brought him through in 3rd place.

Other scores of note, Steve and Cora finished with 28 points on the day, which was enough to send Steve home with a smile on his face after winning all his side bets (the queue following his day one score was unusually long…..). Del Manderson had what can only be described as very difficult day and trailed home with 17 points after featuring so strongly on Saturday.

Congratulations to Tye on a deserved victory and in his speech he reflected on the importance of the society and his own personal battle to get back to form to match his undoubted class.
