2014 ACGA v Cypriots GS Society Match

ACGA v CYPRIOTS......ALWAYS A VERY CLOSE CONTEST

Singles format the Achilles heel for ACGA against Cypriot society

On a sunny Wednesday morning a strong ACGA team squared up to the Cypriot golf society at Old Fold Manor Golf Club in the annual battle for supremacy.

The ACGA team included the main Hierarchy of this year’s order of merit plus some noted match-play winners, this gave us real sense of confidence that this year the ACGA would be able to defend the trophy so gloriously won last year.

As usual the banter was well intentioned but also on the cusp of gamesmanship. This annual competition has never been the resting place for the faint hearted and true to form the competition both on the golf course and in the clubhouse was fierce.

The morning round was based on the four-ball better ball format and just as in the tri-society competition last month, the ACGA performed well by winning 4 out of the 6 points available.

ACGA - 4

Cypriot GS - 2

The afternoon Round was based on singles format with 1 point going to the winner, 0 points to the looser.

This is proving to be a format that the ACGA players tend to struggle with, but it was nip and tuck all the way.

Cypriot GS - 7 and a half points

ACGA - 4 and a half.

Final total scores:

Cypriot Golf Society - 9 and a half

ACGA  - 8 and a half

Trophy won by the Cypriot Golf Society.

There are many lessons that were learnt during this year’s inter-society matches, the main one being. The ACGA needs to improve its approach to singles match-play. In the words of my primary school report “we will be looking for improvements in this area next year”
