2018 ACGA v Titans & CGS Society Match

ACGA LAST DAY COLLAPSE LOSES TRI-SOCIETY CUP

Last weekend the ACGA, Titans and Caribbean Golf Society (CGS) contested the annual Tri-Society cup at the wonderful Forest of Arden Golf club. The competition was played on 2 courses (Arden & Aylsford) aesthetically different courses but both were challenging.

The banter was as usual lively and well intentioned, but make no mistake these teams were here on business.

Day 1 was based on the four-ball better ball format and the ACGA took the honours by securing a very creditable four points whilst Titans and CGS came in with two and a half points each. The talk over evening dinner was about the closeness of the matches and on at least two occasions ACGA had to come back from being behind.

Day 2 was based on 3-ball groupings 1 player from each society in each group, where six points per hole were split depending on each players score. For example the winner of the hole could receive up to six points if he or she won the hole by 2 or more shots on their playing partners, or in the event that all three players scored the same amount the six points would be divided equally (2 points each). The secret to this format is to always remain in touch with your playing partners at all times. After totalling the scores the winner will receive 2 points second place 1 point and last place nil.

The ACGA immediately extended their lead in the competition with the first 5 groups coming in with 8 points taking our total so far to 11 points (we estimated that 16 points would win the competition). From that point onwards we suffered from the type of sporting collapse that can only be compared with the England cricket team in Australia or the current West Indies team against anyone.

Of the remaining 7 games the ACGA could only muster two points with 5 players registering nil points. Meanwhile the CGS and Titans rallied to score fifteen and a half points each to walk away with the Tri-Society trophy and the bragging rights. The look of dejected disbelief on the ACGA players faces as the scores came in and the realisation that the trophy was slipping from our grasp, had to be seen to be believed.

Final scores:

Titans and Caribbean Golf Society fifteen and a half points

ACGA 14 points

Trophy shared between Titans and CGS.

Whilst it was a competition all participants displayed an open and welcoming attitude to all, regardless of who was on which team. A gentleman in the pro-shop was overheard saying that just being around the energy was great to be part of.

The fact that this competition nearly didn't happen is quite unthinkable.

Look out next year!
