2015 Major 1 The Warwickshire

“Cudjoe” believe it!

Wayne Cudjoe blows away the opposition to win the 1st 2015 ACGA major at The Warwickshire. Over a very competitive weekend of golf, dominated by very strong winds of up to 30mph, Wayne finally got to grips with his handicap to take victory with an overall score of +14. What!! +14?. The winning score – if that’s what you call it was a fare reflection of the course conditions over the weekend.

Saturday on the Warwickshire Kings Course was very windy and the 2 par 3 signature holes did a lot of damage. The 1st of the par 3’s, behind the leisure centre, required a 160 yard carry over water to make the green. it didn’t matter which hole you played on the course the wind always seemed to be in your face.  Fair to say that an array of very well hit balls with rescue woods, 3 woods and drivers  all ended in the lake….move on. The par 3 235yard index 3, wind in the face just made most guys laugh out loud.  Wind conditions made it more like 280 years…seriously. Richie Payne hit what looked like a 3 iron or a 2 iron and ended up 40 yards short. Yes 40 years short.

Sunday on the Earls Course was,  unbelievably,  more windy than the Saturday and just like Saturday course conditions sucked  the strength, energy, resolve, spirit and general love of the game out of almost all. Players went out in reverse order allowing contenders to tee off in the final groups.  Wayne came in victorious.

In addition to the wind, the clay based courses were still very soft under foot making play around the greens very tricky. That being said Wayne handled it and took victory in the Christian English sponsored event. It should be remembered that he won the day on both Saturday and Sunday and his financial reward from the sweep meant he actually got his entire weekend for free….petrol money and all.

Del  Manderson summed up the golf really well when he said he was glad to play in such conditions as it demonstrated to all that whilst we still think out golf skills are OK, these weather conditions just show that we all still have a lot to learn. The weekend, attended by several partners was well enjoyed and the Associations thanks are extended to the Staff and Officials at both the Warwickshire Golf club and the Chesford Grange Hotel.
