2014 ACGA vs Friends Society Match

ACGA Renew Old “Friendships…..

”Our annual match against Friends GS, played at the quirky yet always well-formed West Essex golf course (did you think I was going to say young Julia Roberts??)

Anyway – the annual competition between "Friends Golf Society", (is there a better merry band than them,) and the ultra-focused and competitive acga select…. With many captains’ picks a plenty could this be the time that the ACCGA got their comeuppance??? Given the banter and big talk as the breakfast rolls were being consumed, one would have to take a step back and reserve judgement – this would be played out, and scores hold everyone to account….

The scores below showed that this was indeed one of what our secretary seems to have created the word “blushuuung” for the Collin’s English dictionary – the rest of us are too magnanimous to express such adjectives, and simply express that the Friends Golf Society caught us on a good day.

Looking at the scores, you will see firstly the strengths in depth of our handicaps, and then the strength of the team, including the non-regular (captain’s picks). We are sure that even whilst standing on that very first tee, the Friends captain, former ACGA stalwart, Manley Mason, must have been wondering what the rest of the day would behold…. In the end???? Same results as last year…

There was no doubt that the ACGA were in the ascendency, having already beaten Cypriots and having some tough but good scores our own Majors – and knowing the track of West Essex, (with many having had reconnaissance expeditions in advance of the recent major – meant that we had the distinct advantage.

The strength of the team, or the fact that Friends caught us on a great day, was magnified by a couple of strong results. The duo of Leo and Wayne certainly imposed their will on their opponents with a strong 18 holes between them., administering, the infamous “dog license”. Also, dishing out mayhem were Dudley and Ernie (how did HE get in??) representing south London’s finest - (Police and thieves, in the streets…. Oh yeaaah… fighting the nation with their, Guns and ammunition) – also winning 7&6

That being said, the joking, camaraderie and respect between the team should not be understated, and was a strong feature of the matches between the two societies, and reflective of why this has become an annual feature.

So much so, that the captain and vice-captain appear to have loosened their grip and entered into a bout of complacency, lacking that killer touch, or importantly, knowing the reality of friendship, golfing etiquette, and knowing that it is not just about going for the jugular, but the participation and joyous nature post golf and in the bar – of which there was much hilarity, taking the proverbial as well as respect shown to all and sundry (by the way Keith and Jackie lost on the last, after being 4 up with 5 to play…..to stop the white wash or was it that Bagel Len did not hold a put all day until the last hole)??

A great day, on a good course, played in typically friendly manner.
