Double Bubble!! Sheddy wins Back-to-Back Majors…
It seems that London Buses and Sheddy Rose’s wins have something in common. You wait for one to come along and very quickly a second one follows..
Redlibbets GC was chosen as the venue for Major 5 this season, and it was great to see it bathed in sunshine and as well presented as last season. Kent is called the garden of England Redlibbets certainly lives up to that.
Last year’s major here was won with a lowly 35 points. However, that was played in a continual downpour. With the sun shining and the course in excellent condition, early predictions were that a score substantially higher would be required to achieve victory this time around. Redlibbets is an interesting course, with many elevated tees, blind tee shots and undulating greens. As much as a score can be made on it, there is also the high probability that chasing a score will do nothing but feed the charity blob count and provide good comedy material for our Blobmeister Stevie G, and so it proved.
Captain Mark once again welcomed the 42 player field following breakfast (and the obligatory Bookie session) which included guests Julia Regis, Dudley Stephenson (when will he finally join??), Damian Queva (Ditto!!), Mark Toulon, Peter Bennett and Wallace Murduch. The players then eagerly set out to achieve victory and more importantly cover bets and gain bragging rights on the day. Looking at the overall results, scoring was consistently high, with only 5 points separating the top 10. As predicted though, the challenging and risk/reward nature of the course meant many players came up just short of a placing with a single hole making the difference in their placings…
Last year’s champion Cass Browne came home with a creditable 36 points (one more than last year). Unfortunately, this was only good enough for 7th place. Four players achieved that score and were sperated by countback, with George Grant, John Huke and Stuart Austrie 4 - 6th respectively. In 3rd place was the ever consistent Richard Payne with 38 points. Surely a win must be on the cards for “Course Record” this year. Beating Richard on countback was Edwin Walrond, who made the most of his shots…
Ultimately the overall winner was AGAIN!! Sheddy “Happy Hammers” Rose, who edged out the field with an impressive 39 points. He therefore joins a small list of back to back Major winners. Congratulations Sheddy and lets see if you can make it a threepeat when you next tee it up.
A very enjoyable day was wrapped up by Captain Mark and we move on to the weekender at Wyboston Lakes in September.
