Sheddy Makes Three!!!

Sheddy Rose makes it a hattrick of wins in the ACGA 2024 Season

ACGA Captain Mark Henry chose his home course of Brookmans Park for his first Captain’s day. He also managed to choose a day when the sun shone and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. An impressive feat considering the recent ark inspired weather we have been experiencing. In what was an eagerly anticipated event, which would decide the final Major winner, the Order of Merit placings and the Leading Lady golfer, a full field of 55 golfers gathered at 8:30am for the Captain’s address. This of course was preceded by the usual collection of the sweep monies and the completion of the Paddy Power levels of individual bets.

The numbers were bolstered by 16 guests including several members from Brookmans Park, as well as former long-time members Tyrone Carter and Terry Morris, former Captain Roger Goddard and Damion Queva. It was great to see them and great that Captain Mark supported by such a big field on his Captain’s day. A testament to the popularity of Mark and all the effort he has put in with the Committee to ensuring the season ran as successfully and smoothly as possible.

Operating off of a two-tee start, the players congregated around the tee boxes and battle commenced. A lot of work has gone into Brookmans Park over the last two years to improve drainage and the course presentation. It was definitely money well spent, with the greens all in excellent condition and the fairways largely devoid of wet spots or mud. Hats off to the ground staff on producing a challenging track in such good condition.

Once scores started to come in, it became clear that quite a few golfers took advantage of the conditions to produce par or near par scores. From a guest point of view Terry Morris (21hcp) top scored with 40pts, followed by Tyrone Carter (3hcp)on 38pts and Dickie Gomez (1hcp) with 35pts. As far as the members were concerned, 35pts was a popular score Chris Thomas, George Grant, Mark Henry, Mickey Griffin, Trevor Edwards hitting that score. There were also three scores of 34pts. At the business end, Chris Thomas held onto 3rd place by virtue of countback. In 2nd place, again via countback was Randy Plowright with 36pts. The winner, and we have to say well worthy and deserved, was Sheddy Rose, also with 36pts but with a superior back nine. This victory by Sheddy, which was his 3rd of the season, matches a feat set by the late, great Darryl Oxley who won three Majors in the 1995 season. That shows how rare that is, as it’s taken nearly 30 years for that to be matched. Congratulations Sheddy. A true Gentleman and top golfer.

At the post meal presentations, several trophies were handed out as follows:

2024 Singles Champion – Randy Plowright

2024 Order of Merit Champion – Mark Henry

2024 Champion Lady Golfer – Denise Regis

Order Of the Wooden Spoon – Mickey Griffin

Several auctions were held for fourball vouchers at several courses, with the proceeds again benefitting our chosen charities, as well as the usual collection of the blob money. This again was for the benefit of our chosen charities.

Captain Mark wrapped up proceedings and brought to an end anther great season for the ACGA. Long may it continue. Onwards and upwards to the 32nd season of this great society….
