2021 Inaugural Black British Golfer’s Open Tournament
The date was the 11th September 2021 and the venue was The Shire London Golf Club. The occasion the Inaugural “Black British Golfers” Open.
The Black British Golfers (BBG) is the brainchild of its founder Ray Nyabola. Its aim is to promote and increase the representation of Black golfers in the UK, and encourage the next generation to take up this great sport. Professional Golfer, Callaway Ambassador and Golf Coach Zane Scotland has worked closely with Ray in an advisory capacity. Zane played on the European Tour after qualifying for the Open Championship as 16 year old amateur in 1999.. He turned professional in 2003 but a car crash led to him having to led to him not reaching the levels he was destined for. He did continue on to play on the European Tour in 2007 as well as the Challenge Tour and EuroPro tours.
There were Societies present that represented all over the African and Caribbean community, as well as all over the UK. The societies included the ACGA, CGS, M4 Fairways and NUGA. There were also a good number of our future generation present on the day, which was great to see and bodes well for years to come.
The ACGA contingent included Captain Stuart Austrie, Founder member Frank Skinner, Keith Murray, Steve Garner (more on him later), Cassius Browne, Amaya Athill, Julia Regis and Bernie Scotland.
The event was opened by CGS Chairman Junior Harris who assisted Ray in organising the event along with Frank Skinner and members from the other societies who were present on the day.
Over 60 golfers took part in the various categories, and the ACGA were well represented on the final podiums, with Amaya Athill and Steve Garner placing 2nd and 1st respectively in the individual categories.
