2017 Major 2 South Herts GC

Major 2 - South Herts GC 5th May

The Big OG returns to Rock them

They say that class is permanent while form is temporary, well on this fascinating day at South Herts golf club, an old and very successful member returned to the ACGA community and reminded us of his class.

To set the scene, this was the second ACGA major of the year, South Herts Golf course was immaculately presented with the greens running at 10.5 on the stimp, the fairways cut tight and the weather set cloudy, windy but fair. This was a 27 hole stableford event , 9 holes in the morning followed by  a 2 course lunch, then 18 holes followed by sandwiches and the presentation.

As is typical for all ACGA events there was laughter and competition in equal measure. It was very pleasing to see some old faces return to the ACGA and immediately immerse themselves in the banter that is synonymous with ACGA events.

A good turnout of members and guests saw play commence at 10:06am with the annual captains opening drive which found the fairway bunker just short of the green.

There were some very respectable morning 9 hole scores which saw the leading total being 20 stableford points by Del Manderson, 18 points by our treasurer (Sophia Lodge) and 17 points by the captain.

The afternoon round proved to be more challenging for the leading players none of whom would end the day in the top 3 places. In fact the morning leader  Del, in keeping with his showing at The Vale, could only have had what can be described as a living nightmare round. Del did not score a point on 9 holes and came in with a total of 18 points. The eventual winner on the day has accumulated an outstanding record of winning over the years and who’s competitive instincts have made him into a formidable golfer, playing off a handicap of 5 and always in the mix. Ladies and gentlemen we should all be upstanding for the winner of the 2nd Major Mr Rock of ages Malcolm O’Garro. In Malcolm’s winning speech he made references to the quality of the field and his love for the ACGA community.

2nd place went to Cora Edwards and third place went to Mark Henry.

This was a very enjoyable day and the ACGA did itself proud with regards to the quality of golf played and the manner in which its members presented themselves. This was most notable in the speed of play, where all players / groups went round within their allotted times.

Footnote:

The captain was contacted by the secretary of South Herts who commended the ACGA and said that all of his staff were very impressed by our conduct and said that we will be welcomed in the event that we choose to revisit the course in the future.

Frankie Fevrier

It is with great sadness that we have been informed of the passing of one of our longest serving members. Frankie was a caring and humorous character and the association is truly saddened in hearing this news. The committee will meet to discuss how the ACGA will show a mark of respect in remembrance of one of the great characters who helped to build this association.
