Friday the 13th...traditionally unlucky for some and on the day this proved to be the case for so many.....!

The ACGA descended en masse to Dyrham Park on a glorious sunny day where the weather, golf course, facilities and membership combined to make this a memorable event for all who attended. The weather would have been more in keeping with Brazil 2014, and it soon became clear the winner would be the person who could keep cool and not wilt under the trying conditions and challenging course. The tone was set early on by Randy, who decided the best way to deal with the pressure and expectations was to bring his own friends and be grouped with them. Leon Brown thought it best to arrive for his tee time with minutes to spare wearing pink socks and therefore avoid the mind games and talk of "never played here before..." and "haven't picked up my clubs in weeks....." which seems to be used as a means of lowering expectations by so many. As we'll see later, one of these strategies proved more successful than the other.LB - Winner Major 3 2014

To justify a 2 tee start, there were 51 players in attendance, including 6 guests. (One of these was our old member Phil Nugent and it was good of him to continue his old tradition of donating friendly fivers liberally throughout the membership..). This high number heightened the usual flurry of betting once the starter’s sheets were handed out. In fact one of the guests was overheard saying they thought an auction had started, with the amount of "5 and 5", "straight 5", "5, 5, 5" calls and handshaking that took place.

Our great lady captain Jacqui brought proceedings to order with her welcome speech, wished all a great day, and with that battle commenced.

Looking at some of the morning scores, the beautifully laid out course seduced many into thinking it was there for the taking. How wrong they were. This lady was all about subtlety, with the emphasis being on accuracy and good green reading. Brute strength was never going to defeat her.  The usual suspects showed their commitment to getting as many shots for their money as they could, by shooting scores that would leave nothing to play for in the afternoon but to "equalise”. Patrick, Ernie and Ricky, you are models of consistency we all aspire to. There was a surprising new member to this so far exclusive club. Malcolm "Big OG" O'Garro, probably still acclimatising to his new handicap and subsequent shortened clubs to match the chop, shot a surprising 17 points, but as we'll see, form is only temporary....... Roger "Boom Boom" "hole in one" Goddard was the half way leader with an outstanding 37 points. He was closely followed by Course Record Payne (34) and our own Stevie G (32). Indeed Course Record had stated we'd need a helicopter to carry the number of birdies he'd get on the day. Richard, I think my son's toy version will suffice....!

Tall Man Steve Garner was second with a total of 66 points (is he really shorter than Jacqui???) ahead of Roger Goddard who was third on count back. The longest drive was taken by Bose, using an illegal Big Bertha driver with extra-long shaft and a pinnacle super long distance ball, or so I am reliably informed. Although this could be just sour grapes from the big hitter crew who were all put in their place on the day. Nearest the pin was won by Mark Henry. Congratulations Leon and your wish for your handicap to be cut based on your improvement, is about to be made a reality....

With the sun beating down on us throughout the day, the afternoon round was always going to be a war of attrition with only the coolest players and strongest minds surviving. Our secretary Ernie, fed up with telling the Mrs after each event that he was donating fivers to charity, shot a creditable 32 points. Malcolm, staring financial meltdown of Northern Rock proportions in the face, hit 36 points. Roger found the going in the afternoon a little tougher and could not repeat his heroics of the morning. Cassius Browne, going for his 5th successive podium placing, forgot how to use his irons and missed out on a top 10. In fact overall the afternoon scores were better than the morning, which makes the £174 collected by the blob-o-meter even more surprising.

Once all the cards were in, scores counted and the "shoulda, coulda, woulda” stories told (and in some cases, retold again and again and again.....), Leon "soon come" Brown emerged a worthy winner following an afternoon score of 37 points to add to his morning score of 31 for a major winning total of 68 points. Leon gave his acceptance speech dressed resplendently in a sharp looking suit and matching shirt donated on the day by Christian English.
